KANCHAN DAWN HUNTER (on the left side of photo)
Kanchan, Co-Director at Spiral Gardens Community Food Security Project, has had a deep connection with healing plants as long as she can remember but her commitment to learning them and their preparation crystallized when she became a mother 28 years ago. To prove this she produced her first plant-based product, Rasa Body Balm, and shared it with family and friends. Creating that product launched her into her first home-based business and firmly onto the path of herbal medicine making. Spiral Gardens grows a large variety of useful plants and teaches children and adults, about how to grow, identify, harvest, dry, prepare and use medicinal plants on this soil. She believes Earth provides everything we need to live well and to heal. Her vision is to find us all connected with each other in service to Life and Earth who nourishes us all. |
TANYA HENDERSON (on the right side of photo)
As creator and director of Sacred Roots Wellness, Tanya found her way into the world of holistic health and indigenous healing in the midst of several years of New York City living, a hectic career in journalism and a serious need for balance. A few years post the World Trade Center attacks, she packed her bags, headed west and never looked back. In very little time-- the place, people and plants grew on her. She earned certifications in Western Herbalism and Holsitic Nutrition at the Ohlone Center for Herbal Studies and Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition & Culinary Arts. As a former nutrition-based cooking instructor in the Berkeley Unified School District, her love for plants as both food & medicine has been her driving force in raising awareness around healthy food & lifestyle choices by incorporating herbs into the diet both preventatively & medicinally. In addition to her private practice, she also teaches yoga in the schools with a goal of inspiring individuals to their personal best. * photo credit Pamela Arriera |
